do MBAs think they are smarter than everyone else?
I was talking to my mother last week and she was telling me how she struggled when she first opened her own business. To make long story short, the people that sold her the brand name and idea for her business were all MBAs. We are talking mid 90s in Poland...
My mom was doing whatever they told her to do, but the results were terrible: no clients, no money! Every time she tried to tell them how the company should be run she heard: 'we are the MBAs, we know better' etc. She doesn't have any graduate degree. They always tried to show that their statistics, tables and market research are more important that her gut feeling about how to run a business in a small town in central Poland, from which all young people escape to Warsaw as soon as they turn 19. After 2 years of that struggle she thanked them for their time and started doing things the way she wanted. Now she owns the biggest language school in the town... and she can't stand anything related to the MBA degree. For sure, she will not be very impressed if I tell her I decided to go for an MBA!
I write about it since I heard similar opinions quite often: MBAs know a lot but cant be creative. I dont agree but.. hey, it didn't come from nowhere!

Distance learning MBA programs
One year MBA program is a good option but many people interested in doing their MBA who don't feel like they can spend 2 years on it. But there is another new way of doing your MBA: distance learning! Here is some info I just found:
Many business schools have successfully adapted their existing MBA programs so that all or part of the course can be delivered at a local site, close to where the student lives and works. Schools combine a range of delivery methods to ensure that the content of the programs are taught in such a way that the remoteness of a student’s location is no obstacle to the academic and learning experience.
In some situations, schools establish regional teaching centres where certain elements of a program, such as seminars or keynote lectures, are delivered physically so that students can travel and experience this element of the program. In other cases, elements of the degree might be offered to students through their actual attendance at lectures or teaching elements at the institution itself, thus offering part of the fulltime teaching experience to these distant students.
Distance learning MBA programs are a plenty and prestigious schools like the Garvin School at Thunderbird, in the US, are offering students who for some reason can’t undertake a traditional classroom-based MBA the opportunity to gain the same qualification as a full-time on-campus student. Whatever your interests are, it’s almost certain you will find a reputable distance learning program that provides you with the tools you need to meet your professional and educational goals.

Степень доктора — вершина образования. Для получения степени доктора необходимо предварительно пройти магистратуру, аспирантуру и иметь хорошо проработанную тему для диссертации.
Соискатели докторской степени посвящают несколько лет тщательному изучению выбранной темы, при этом большая часть исследований носит сугубо теоретический характер и зачастую совершенно неприменима на практике и едва ли принесёт коммерческую выгоду. Это не значит, что все соискатели докторской степени отказываются от участия в жизни компании, просто чаще всего такие люди переходят на преподавательскую или стратегическую работу.

Is the MBA degree as respected in Germany as it is in the UK? Do Germans choose home business schools?
Ich mochte an meinem Blog von Zeit zu Zeit auch auf Deutsch schreiben; der Grund dafür ist dass ich fast 3 Semester in Deutschland studiert habe (fuer mein MSC, 2002 und 2004) und vielleicht koennte ich meinen MBA (wenn ich mich entscheide) auch dort machen.
Wie gesagt, habe ich schon ein MSC und jetzt bin nicht sicher welche Möglichkeit für meine Karriere Entwicklung (und meine Firma) besser ist:
a) Doktor
b) MBA
c) Die fachlichen Kurse
Heutzutage ist MBA extrem populaer und in UK/USA genießt höchste Anerkennung und gilt als der Schlüssel für die Top Karriere der Zukunft.
Ich wohne jetzt in London, hier arbeite ich und mochte meine Karriere in Bioinformatics (computational biology) hier planen... aber bevor ich mich entscheide was besser ist (phD, MBA.. nichts?) mochte ich besser verstehen was MBA und Doktorat in anderen Lander bedeuten. Das ganze Leben bleibe ich im England nicht, also es kann so sein dass ich mich nach Polen kehre, oder nach Deutschland, oder Russland vielleicht?
Also in Deutschland, ist ein MBA in der heutigen Zeit praktisch unerlässlich, wenn man eine Management-Karriere im Sinn hat? Wenn JA, dann in welchem Bereich? In meinem Bereich?

The Polish prospective, MBA w Polsce
I just found this great article on choosing a post graduate degree on ceo.cxo.pl
It summarizes very well current situation in Poland where most people born in early 80s already have their masters degrees, competition is high and more and more of them realize they need another degree to become managers.
The employers however, do not consider MBA necessary and are mostly looking for narrow expertise diplomas and certificates. One of the headhunters mentioned in the article says most of his clients, large and medium foreign companies, prefer their employees to have certificates in relevant field over the mba degree. He also mentions that phd is considered an obstacle as it means the potential employee is not enough business oriented.

Rzadko pojawia się wymóg ukończenia studiów MBA. Preferowana zaś wartość wykształcenia podyplomowego jest taka: 1. kierunkowe studia podyplomowe, 2. MBA, 3. doktorat. Ten ostatni tytuł często przeszkadza - potencjalny pracodawca obawia się, że kandydat ma nastawienie naukowo-teoretyczne zamiast biznesowego"."

One year MBA
Both PhD and MBA programs take sooo long.... the latter one is obviously shorter but still, 2 years sound scary! That's why I was happy to learn that one year MBA programs are becoming more and more popular in both USA and here, in the United Kingdom.
One year of a career brake seems to be more doable and cheaper but do all employers see a one-year MBA equal to the traditional programs? That will probably depend on which business school you have your MBA degree from... if the reputation of your b-school is good enough, I do not believe that anyone would consider "shorter" MBA inferior.
I still need to do more research on what do the one-year MBA programs cover and what the cost is. Not all business schools offer such option yet and I read the other day that admission process is stricter and more difficult. At the same time, in our hectic world today when no one has time for anything, one-year programs seem to be the future of MBA.
Any comments or suggestions on this issue?

There are many blogs about "my way to MBA" and "which business school is best" but what about people who are NOT entirely sure yet whether MBA degree is the best choice for them?
I got my Masters degree almost 5 years ago.. Wow, it's been a while, time to make some decisions.
Should I continue working and take some extra weekend courses to improve my skills and qualifications or should I take a career brake and go for another degree? In such case; is PhD or an MBA program better?
Which one can give me a better post degree job and salary? Which one is more respected in the UK, where I now live, in my home country (Poland) and in all the countries I may move to (Germany, Spain, Spain) when I decide I need a change?
I haven't made any decisions yet but to be perfectly honest I need to admit the MBA seems to be most attractive education path at the moment; but then again, the cost of it and the admission requirements scare me to death!
